Just to update, production has started on the memorial. I’m going to post photos of sculptor Kenneth Maurice working on the field memorial center piece. The sculpting hasn’t started yet, but we have finished preparing the piece for Kenneth using a diamond contour wire saw. The photos below show the piece as it exists now after contouring with as much excess granite taken off as possible.

The sculptor, Kenneth Maurice, started work on the piece on Wednesday the 14th. Two special guests were in attendance, Marion Gray and Stacy Cadorette. Below: The crane operator at left and Ken on the right, position the piece on its back so Ken can access the joint in order to clean up and establish the bottom edge. ![]()
Below: Ken started by defining the bottom edge and cutting away excess granite from the leaf block which was left the full length of the pedestal by the contour saw. The sculptor only needs a couple inches at the top for a leaf to overhang the pedestal.
Below: Ken takes two slices off the end and presents them to Marion and Stacy. This was an electrifying moment, after all their hard work, dedication and perseverance through many obstacles; these families could finally see finish line.
Below: Marion Gray with the first piece:

Below: With the bottom done, the piece is stood upright and Ken starts to locate the different planes that must be established, as well as the various elements of the design. The center line was marked using a laser level.
Below: Here is shot of the pedestal area. If you look closely, you can see the outline of the boots sketched with an angle grinder and a diamond blade.

By the end of this week things are looking good. The photos speak for themselves.
Posted on: 05/18/2010 Here are a few more photos taken today. Progress on the soldier must take a break while other areas are worked up. Finishing the figure now would make it vulnerable to accidental breakage, the little guy's gun will be rather fragile as it is completed. The State House has gotten more detailed and upper areas of the tree are getting some attention.

Kenny has made some good progress since the last update. He's jumped around a bit to establish some of the elements and work up some of the previous ones a little. The background above the State House is near or at the finished level with the leaves being roughed in. Camels Hump can be seen in the background.

Ken has been making great progress on "Falling Leaves" and I'm getting excited about that too. I'm posting what will be one of the last updates. I will do one next week but will stop posting them after the ride. You'll have to come visit the real deal in Randolph when it's finished to see how it turned out. Anyway, here are the photos. I'll let them speak for themselves except to say Ken has done most of the layout and heavy stone removal and is now doing the painstaking detail work necessary to bring the piece to life.
